Supported gets fixes and is more than 90 days from its EOL date. EOL soon reaches end of life within 90 days. End of life gets no more security fixes.

How Ruby on Rails support works

Ruby on Rails supports each minor release series (for example 7.2 or 8.0) for a fixed time: bug fixes for about a year after its release, and security fixes for about two years. Older series get no patches at all, not even for severe vulnerabilities, unless you pay for third-party long-term support.

A Rails upgrade is usually tied to a Ruby upgrade, so plan the two together: newer Rails versions require a minimum Ruby version, and old Rails releases are not tested against the newest Ruby. Many apps fall behind because a single upgrade looks large; going one minor version at a time keeps each step small.

Above you find every Rails series with its release date, latest patch version, end of bug fixes and end of security support.

Ruby on Rails EOL questions

Which Ruby on Rails versions are still supported?

As of 5 Nov 2026: Ruby on Rails 8.1 (until 10 Oct 2027), Ruby on Rails 8.0 (until 7 Nov 2026).

When is the next Ruby on Rails end of life?

Ruby on Rails 8.0 reaches its end of life on 7 Nov 2026 (in 2 days). After that date it gets no more security fixes.

How do I check which Ruby on Rails version I run?

Run bin/rails --version. Check every server and container image, not only your laptop: production often runs an older version than development.

What does "end of life" mean for Rails?

The Rails core team no longer releases fixes for that series, including security fixes. Known vulnerabilities in it stay open.

How do I upgrade Rails safely?

Upgrade one minor version at a time, fix the deprecation warnings of the current version first, run bin/rails app:update, and use the new framework defaults step by step. The official upgrading guide lists the changes for every version.
