Supported gets fixes and is more than 90 days from its EOL date. EOL soon reaches end of life within 90 days. End of life gets no more security fixes.

How Ruby support works

Ruby ships a new minor version every year on 25 December. Each branch then gets regular bug-fix releases for roughly two years and security-only releases after that, so a Ruby version usually lives a little over three years. The end of life is normally announced for the end of March.

Once a branch is end of life, security holes found in it are no longer fixed, and gems start dropping it from their supported versions: Rails, Sidekiq and most popular gems test only against maintained Rubies. Staying on an old Ruby therefore tends to freeze the rest of your Gemfile, too.

The table above lists every Ruby branch with its release date, the latest patch release and the date it stops getting security fixes. Upgrading one minor version at a time (3.3 to 3.4, then 3.4 to 4.0) is usually the least painful path.

Ruby EOL questions

Which Ruby versions are still supported?

As of 5 Nov 2026: Ruby 4.0 (until 31 Mar 2029), Ruby 3.4 (until 31 Mar 2028), Ruby 3.3 (until 31 Mar 2027).

When is the next Ruby end of life?

Ruby 3.3 reaches its end of life on 31 Mar 2027 (in 146 days). After that date it gets no more security fixes.

How do I check which Ruby version I run?

Run ruby --version. Check every server and container image, not only your laptop: production often runs an older version than development.

How long is a Ruby version supported?

Roughly three years and three months: about two years of normal maintenance, then security fixes only until the end of life, which is usually at the end of March.

Does upgrading Ruby break my Rails app?

Minor upgrades are usually smooth, but check your Rails version first: older Rails releases do not support the newest Ruby, and some gems with C extensions need an update. Run your test suite with the new Ruby in CI before you switch production.
